Holger Knaack

Rotary International Inspects with Compassion, Illuminating a “New Vision” for the Elderly
Rotary Club of Tsuen Wan
[December 16, 2025, Hong Kong] A delegation from Rotary International leadership visited Hong Kong Adventist Hospital today to inspect the progress of the “Cataract Surgery Charity Project,” a deep collaboration between the Rotary Club of Tsuen Wan and the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Charitable Foundation. The delegation was led by Holger Knaack, Chair of The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees and Past Rotary International Director, who traveled from afar. Accompanied by DG Cassy Cheng, PDG Wilson Cheng, PDG Eric Chak, and AG Sally Luk, they witnessed the “new lease on light” this public welfare project has brought to underprivileged seniors in Hong Kong.

Precise Outreach: Channeling Every Act of Kindness to the Most Pressing Needs
That afternoon, guided by Rotary Club of Tsuen Wan President Michele Cheng, Project Team Leaders PP Dominic Chu, PP Stanley, and fellow club members, the Rotary International leadership delegation toured the hospital’s operating rooms, low-fee wards, and post-operative recovery areas. They gained detailed insights into the medical team’s treatment processes, equipment usage, and patient follow-up services. In the recovery area, 68-year-old Grandma Lee, preparing for her post-op check-up with a nurse, recognized the staff who had previously conducted community outreach. She proactively expressed her gratitude: “Thank you, President Michele, for driving me home after the surgery! I’m so grateful! Before, my vision was blurry, I couldn’t see street signs, and always needed someone to accompany me when going out. Now, after the surgery, my vision has recovered, and I don’t have to trouble my children anymore.”
Hearing Grandma Lee’s story, President Michele shared her feelings with the delegation: “Hong Kong has a large population of cataract patients. Waiting times in public hospitals often stretch to several years, leaving many low-income seniors waiting in anguish with blurred vision. We launched this project hoping to help seniors like Grandma Lee bypass the lengthy queues and regain their sight as soon as possible.” PP Dominic added, “To achieve this goal, precise outreach to the target beneficiaries is key. We persistently adhere to sending resources to those most in need.”
To ensure charitable resources precisely reach those most in need, the Rotary Club of Tsuen Wan had previously partnered with the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Charitable Foundation and other organizations to conduct recruitment activities in communities like Chai Wan and Kwun Tong. On-site, the hospital team thoughtfully explained cataract-related knowledge, while staff assisted seniors in filling out health assessment questionnaires based on criteria like age and income. The Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Charitable Foundation then meticulously verified applicants’ visual acuity and financial situations. Through multiple rounds of review, the final list of eligible recipients was determined, ensuring every dollar of funding is used where it’s needed most.
Funding & Collaboration: A Shared Dream Built on Global Resources and Local Strength
During a subsequent thematic meeting, Hong Kong Adventist Hospital President Mr. Alex Lan detailed for the Rotary International leadership the project’s specifics regarding funding planning, resource integration, and service implementation.
He stated that the project’s successful launch benefited from sufficient financial support and efficient resource synergy—the Rotary Club of Tsuen Wan, with its professional project planning, successfully applied for and received support from The Rotary Foundation’s “Global Grant.” These funds are designated for 30 cataract surgeries. Simultaneously, the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Charitable Foundation matched this funding at a 1:1 ratio, covering the treatment costs for another 30 surgeries.
To ensure peace of mind for the benefiting seniors, funding from both sides provides “full cost coverage + one-stop service.” This covers all expenses for pre-operative examinations, surgical treatment, and post-operative follow-ups, and also includes considerate services like dedicated accompaniment and guidance throughout the medical process, alleviating both the financial burden and logistical challenges for the elderly.
After listening to the report, Mr. Holger Knaack gave high praise: “This project vividly embodies the Rotary spirit. It effectively combines the deep cultivation advantages of local organizations with the supportive power of global resources, serving as an excellent model with strong referential value.”
This inspection not only consolidated philanthropic synergy for the project but also strengthened the team’s determination to move forward. President Michele stated that the team plans to complete the target of 60 surgeries in the first half of next year, continuing to use action to illuminate the path of light for seniors, allowing warmth and hope to be continually passed on.
