“Rehabilitation Road of Inclusion and Co-creation, Unite for good while Butterflies Dance” Community Co-creation Mural Project
On January 31, 2026, witnessed by distinguished guests including Ms.WONG Wai-han, Ada, Sha Tin District Social Welfare Officer of the Social Welfare Department; District Governor Cassy Cheng (Rotary International District 3450); Principal Clarence Sit of CCC Rotary Secondary School; Mr. Tai Keen Man, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council; and Miss Fung Sau-man, Executive Director of the Council, the final brushstrokes were applied in the drizzling rain, completing the 40-meter-long “Rehabilitation Road” mural at Harmony Manor. This project was organized and executed by the Rotary Club of Butterfly Valley.
Charter President Path Dicky Tong, recalled the day over a year ago when he first visited Harmony Manor up at the top of A Kung Kok Shan Road in Sha Tin. He saw the grey and dirty blank wall and his immediate reaction was, “Let’s paint it beautiful here!”
Preparations began as early as six months prior, empowered by Ms Maria Ho, the “Head of Harmony Manor. Students from the Visual Arts department of CCC Rotary Secondary School (Form 4) were invited to design. Organising Committee was formed with shared responsibilities and mobilised numerous volunteers to collaborate inclusively. The painting sessions spanned two months, involving collectively 500 volunteers count and 3,000 working hours. We had Elderlies, young children, visually impaired individuals, college students, and everyday bikers who happened to have rode up the hill and saw us painting. It brings us great joy to share this collaborative “community mural,” which we believe will stand for many years, now unveiled before our eyes!
Painting a single picture is simple, but painting a 40 x 7meter mural is no easy feat! The mural brings to life characters like the “Square Cats,” originally created by the residents with disabilities at Harmoney Manor. The story on the wall representing the six social welfare organizations located along A Kung Kok Shan Road.
Rotary International champions “Service Above Self.” The majority of our services are done humbly without noise. However, we also hope that our services can be seen by others and bestow a lasting blessing upon the recipients!
Aside from adding a touch of aesthetic beauty to the daily lives of over 200 residents, their families, and more than 140 staff members in Harmony Manor, we also hope this wall can soon become a landmark in the Sha Tin district. We hope it attracts more people to visit, take photos, and appreciate it, symbolizing the community’s acceptance and support for Harmony Manor!
Time needed for many typical community service projects can be short, but the impact can be profound. While creating a mural takes a long time, its existence as a mark in the community is even longer, and it can better highlight our enduring commitment to service.
The Rotary Club of Butterfly Valley will continue to use this project as a benchmark and uphold the “P4PAINT” aspect of our “4P Service Direction.” We will continue to promote “Unite For Good” among diverse individuals in creating lasting impact, thus allowing light and joy to perpetuate.
