Tian Shan #1 Glacier Study Tour & Landmark Initiative

During the Easter holiday, around 120 members, friends, and family joined our Tian Shan #1 Glacier Study Tour, marking a meaningful milestone for Rotary District 3450.

At the Tianshan Glacier Observation and Experiment Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, located at the foothills of the Tian Shan glaciers — the vital “Water Tower of Central Asia” — we proudly unveiled the “Let the Glacier Cool” Third Pole Tian Shan Glacier Landmark. This landmark symbolizes District 3450’s dedication to glacier and water conservation and signifies our strategic partnership with the 中国科学院西北生态环境资源研究院 in advancing scientific research, education, and environmental stewardship. It reflects not only collaboration, but a long‑term commitment to protecting one of the world’s most important water sources.

Throughout the journey, members deepened their understanding of Xinjiang’s natural environment and resources. At the Xinjiang Geological and Mineral Resources Museum, we explored the region’s geological history and mineral wealth, gaining valuable insight into its environmental significance. At Sayram Lake, with its surface still frozen, we were greeted by a stunning landscape of serenity and grandeur — a powerful reminder of nature’s beauty and fragility. In Tangbula Bee Town, we experienced local apiculture culture and tasted the renowned 42‑degree “Zhongnanhai Exclusive” Xinjiang honey, appreciating the region’s unique agricultural development.

We also became the first delegation to visit a school in Yili and delivered the first Hong Kong storybooks ever to enter a local school, planting seeds of cultural understanding and friendship. Although we were unable to visit the Tianyun Salmon Farm due to unforeseen external developments affecting its operations, the delegation handled the change with unity, professionalism, and mutual support.

This initiative represents one of the most significant Rotary landmarks established in mainland China in recent years. Guided by the shared vision of 「璀璨香港 · 大美新疆 · 两地共融」, we have taken an important step in strengthening collaboration and long‑term engagement.

This is only the beginning. Our next phase will be launching a school‑based glacier conservation and education programme, helping young people understand, respect, and care for our planet. We also aim to bring students to personally visit the glacier and promote ongoing cultural exchange.

Rotary District 3450 is reconnecting, rebuilding bridges, and leading meaningful impact once again. Together, we are shaping something that will benefit future generations.
