In the rapidly evolving Age of AI, where artificial intelligence is reshaping our world, ensuring its ethical development and use is more critical than ever. Leading figures in the AI field, such as Geoffrey Hinton, Stuart Russell and Nick Bostrom, have expressed significant concerns about the ethical implications of AI development. Hinton warns of a 10% to 20% risk of human extinction within three decades if AI isn’t managed properly, emphasizing the need for global collaboration and regulation. Russell highlights the importance of aligning AI systems with human values, noting that advanced AI might prioritize its own goals over human interests. Bostrom argues that superintelligent AI could pose existential threats if not designed with human-friendly motivations. These concerns underscore the urgency of initiatives like the AI5GP Project, which provides a vital framework to guide this transformation responsibly.

The AI5GP Project, founded in 2023 by the Rotary Club of Tsuen Wan, a member of Rotary International District 3450, addresses these challenges by championing ethical AI inspired by Rotary’s time-honored Four-Way Test. Recognizing that AI, as a powerful tool created by humans, must be developed with the intention of benefiting humanity, the project introduces the Five Guiding Principles of Ethical AI (AI5GP). These principles — Constructive Intent, Truthfulness, Fairness, Goodwill and Good Relationship, and Benefit for All — are designed to ensure AI serves humanity positively, fostering fairness, truthfulness, and community well-being.

The Five Guiding Principles are:

• Constructive Intent (GP1): AI should be developed with the clear purpose of creating a positive societal impact, ensuring that its applications contribute to the betterment of humanity.
• Truthfulness (GP2): AI systems must be grounded in accurate, transparent, and verifiable information, promoting trust and reliability in their outputs.
• Fairness (GP3): AI should treat all individuals and groups impartially, free from bias, ensuring equitable outcomes for all users.
• Goodwill and Good Relationship (GP4): AI should foster trust, strengthen community bonds, and promote positive interactions among people.
• Benefit for All (GP5): AI should enhance the well-being of all segments of society, ensuring that its benefits are distributed widely and inclusively.

These principles are not just theoretical – they are embedded in practical initiatives that empower Rotary Clubs and their club members to lead in responsible AI use and peace-building. One such initiative is the AI5GP Community Service Guide (https://online.fliphtml5.com/xxqyk/ivch/#p=1), published in Rotary Year 2023-2024. This guide provides Rotary Clubs and their service partners with practical tools and strategies to align their community service projects with the Five Guiding Principles and Rotary’s Areas of Focus. Accompanying the guide is the AI5GPT chatbot (https://poe.com/AI5GPT), an innovative tool that assists clubs in navigating the guide, applying ethical AI concepts to their work, and providing guidance on the ethical dilemmas users may encounter in their daily lives.

Our latest, key initiative is the AI5GP Peace Ambassador Online Course, set to be a focal point for Rotary Year 2025-26. This course anchors the AI5GP Peace Ambassador Program, which trains individuals to champion ethical AI and peace-building in their communities using the project’s tools. Participants in the program receive education on the Five Guiding Principles and their application to AI, engage in community outreach and digital content creation to promote ethical AI awareness, benefit from mentorship by seasoned ambassadors, and are recognized through awards for their outstanding contributions.

By pioneering this global movement within Rotary, the AI5GP Project positions Rotary Clubs at the forefront of responsible technology use, ensuring that AI becomes a force for good. The project warmly invites Rotarians across District 3450 to become AI5GP Peace Ambassadors.
