Connecting the Dots between DEI and Membership
August is ‘Membership and New Club Development Month’. This is the perfect time to celebrate your Club’s members and consider the many options available for strengthening your membership.
Rotary is at its best when we foster a sense of inclusion and belonging in our Clubs.
DEI and Membership – An Important Partnership
During Membership Promotion and Retention Month, DEI remains vital. For Club success, all members must feel included. If members frequently miss meetings, consider why.
Meetings – Try varying times and locations; offer meal-free options to boost participation. Notice who misses service or fellowships events, and reach out to understand why. All members must feel fulfilled and included.
Accessibility and Inclusion – Be aware of members with particular physical or mental special needs when planning. Their perspectives and insights are valid and valuable.
DEI training – Anyone can have an unconscious bias. Invite expert speakers and encourage members to complete the Rotary Online DEI training, then acknowledge their achievements at meetings and in group chats.

World Breastfeeding Week [(1-7 Aug (WHO)]
(International Week currently observed by the United Nations)
World Breastfeeding Week is a global campaign held annually in the first week of August.
The benefits of breastfeeding on infant development are well documented, but breastfeeding in public remains controversial, with mothers banished to dirty toilets to feed their hungry infants. We can do better.
Whilst attitudes take time to change, Hong Kong Government is working on practical solutions, such as the Breastfeeding GPS App (developed by HKU School of Nursing).
Why not share this app with your Club members and promote an initiative designed to give all children the best start in life?
The UN International Day
UN International Youth Day (IYD) on August 12 shines a spotlight on youth challenges and celebrates their vital contributions, with this year’s theme focusing on “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond.” The official 2025 IYD commemoration will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, and online, fostering global and local engagement.
Recognizing the importance of youth, President Xi Jinping noted that Hong Kong’s continued prosperity depends on the success of it’s young people. To that end, the Youth Development Commission was created to help young people grasp local opportunities and to embrace global perspectives, offering multiple youth programmes, including “Youthfest @HK” – this year’s theme being to “Ignite Youth Power.”
Rotary is committed to nurturing the next generation through Roteract, Interact, and Junioract Clubs, supporting and nurturing our younger members so that they may learn, contribute, and live fulfilling lives. If your Club is not already sponsoring a junior Club, consider doing so to support youth growth and ensure a bright future for all.
